How to Play MKV Files on iPhone (Convert MKV to MP4)

Updated · 2 min read

You downloaded an .mkv file and your iPhone just shows a blank icon. That's not a broken file — iOS simply doesn't support MKV. The Photos app won't save it, Files can't preview it, and iMovie won't import it. Here are your two options, and why converting to MP4 is usually the one you want.

Why MKV doesn't work on iPhone

MKV (Matroska) is an open container format that's popular on PCs and for downloads. Apple's own apps never added support for it. What's frustrating is that the video inside an MKV is usually H.264 or HEVC — formats your iPhone plays perfectly. The problem is only the wrapper.

Option 1: watch it in a third-party player

Players such as VLC can open MKV files directly. That's fine if all you want is to watch once. But the file still won't go into your Photos library, won't open in iMovie or other editors, and can't be sent as a normal video in Messages.

Option 2: convert MKV to MP4

  1. Get the app. Download Video & Image Converter — free to try, works offline.
  2. Pick the MKV from Files. Downloads from Safari land in Files › Downloads; files from a computer may be in iCloud Drive.
  3. Choose MP4. If the MKV holds H.264 or HEVC video, Original quality is offered — turn it on and the video is copied without re-encoding. Audio that MP4 players don't accept, like AC-3, Opus or FLAC, is converted to AAC automatically.
  4. Convert and save. Save the MP4 to Photos — now it plays, edits and shares like any other iPhone video.
Other codecs inside? Some MKV files carry VP9 or older formats. Those get a full conversion to H.264 or HEVC instead of a copy. It takes longer, but it's hardware-accelerated, and you can switch apps while it runs.

Have a file to convert right now? It takes a few taps — and nothing is uploaded.

Will converting MKV to MP4 reduce quality?

Not with Original quality: the video stream is copied bit for bit, so the picture is identical. When a full conversion is needed, the default settings keep the quality visually the same; if you'd rather have a smaller file, choose a compression level and check the estimated size before converting.

Can I convert several MKV files at once?

Yes — select a whole folder's worth from Files and they're converted one after another with the same settings.
