How to Convert HEIC Photos to JPG on iPhone
Updated · 2 min read
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (“High Efficiency”). It's a great format — about half the size of JPG at the same quality — but Windows PCs without an extra codec, many web upload forms, and older apps can't open it. Here are three ways to deal with it.
Way 1: convert existing photos to JPG
- Get the app. Download Video & Image Converter — free to try, works offline.
- Pick the photos from your Photos library — that's where HEIC pictures live. Select as many as you need.
- Choose JPG — or PNG, WEBP or BMP — and a compression level. Lower compression keeps more detail; higher compression gives smaller files.
- Convert and save the JPGs to Photos or Files, or share them straight to the website or person who needs them.
Have a file to convert right now? It takes a few taps — and nothing is uploaded.

Go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG — but they take roughly twice the space, and photos you've already taken stay HEIC.
Way 3: convert automatically when copying to a computer
In Settings › Photos, set Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic. Photos are converted to JPG when you copy them over a cable. It doesn't help with uploads, email or messaging.
JPG, PNG or WEBP?
| Format | Best for |
|---|---|
| JPG | Photos — opens everywhere, small files |
| PNG | Screenshots and graphics — lossless, but larger |
| WEBP | Websites — smaller than JPG at similar quality |
| BMP | Old software that needs it |
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, but at a low compression level the difference is invisible. Don't be surprised if the JPG is bigger than the HEIC — that's normal, because HEIC is the more efficient format.
