How to Make a GIF from a Video on iPhone
Updated · 2 min read
Your iPhone plays GIFs everywhere, but it can't turn one of your videos into a GIF out of the box. Apple's Shortcuts app has a basic “Make GIF” action, but you have to build the shortcut yourself and you get little control over length, speed or size. Here's the quicker way.
How to make a GIF from a video on iPhone
- Get the app. Download Video & Image Converter — free to try, no watermark.
- Pick the video from Photos or the Files app.
- Choose GIF as the output format.
- Trim it. Drag the handles to the exact moment you want — GIFs work best at a few seconds long.
- Set speed and loops. Slow it down for a dramatic moment, speed it up for a time-lapse, and choose whether it loops forever or a set number of times. Lower the frame rate for a smaller file.
- Convert and share. Save the GIF to Photos or send it straight to Messages, WhatsApp or Slack.

GIF is a very old format, and it's inefficient: a few seconds of GIF can weigh more than a minute of MP4. To keep it light:
- Keep it short — 2 to 6 seconds is the sweet spot.
- Lower the frame rate — 10–15 fps still looks smooth for most clips.
- Use a smaller size — a GIF in a chat is shown small anyway.
GIF or short MP4?
GIFs autoplay and loop everywhere, with no play button — that's why they're great for reactions and quick demos. If the clip is long or you want sound, a short MP4 is the better choice: much smaller, better quality, and audio included. See how to convert a video to MP4.
