How to Remove Background Noise from a Video on iPhone
Updated · 2 min read
An interview recorded next to a busy road. A vlog full of wind. A meeting recording with a laptop fan humming underneath. You can't re-record the moment — but you can clean up the sound, right on your iPhone.
First: does your iPhone have Audio Mix?
On iPhone 16 and later, the Photos app has an Audio Mix edit for videos recorded on that phone. If that's your case, try it first. For everything else — older iPhones, downloaded videos, screen recordings, voice memos — use AI noise reduction as described below.
How to remove background noise from a video on iPhone
- Get the app. Download Video & Image Converter — free to try, works offline.
- Pick the video from Photos or the Files app.
- Choose an output format — MP4 is a good default. You can keep Original quality on: noise reduction re-encodes only the audio, and the picture is copied untouched.
- Turn on Reduce audio noise and pick a mode (see the table below). You can fine-tune the strength.
- Convert and listen. If noise is still audible, try a stronger mode; if the voice sounds thin, try a gentler one.
| Mode | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Balanced | Most recordings — vlogs, interviews, meetings, screen recordings |
| Strong | Very noisy audio — wind, traffic, crowds |
| Natural | The gentlest clean-up; keeps the voice most natural |
Have a file to convert right now? It takes a few taps — and nothing is uploaded.

- Works well on steady and background noise: fans, air conditioning, traffic, wind, keyboard clicks, room hum.
- Tuned for speech — background music gets reduced along with the noise, so it's not meant for music videos.
- Can't fix distorted (clipped) audio or heavy echo. For the next recording, getting the mic closer to the speaker helps more than anything.
Audio only? Same steps
Voice memos, podcasts and lecture recordings can be cleaned up the same way — pick the audio file instead of a video. The result can be saved as M4A, or converted to MP3 at the same time. See how to convert M4A to MP3.
