How to Free Up iPhone Storage Without Deleting Your Videos

By Olga Klishevich · Updated

"iPhone Storage Almost Full" — and the usual advice is to delete your memories. There's a better way: videos are almost always the biggest storage hog on an iPhone, and compressing them frees most of that space while every single video stays in your library.

Videos are eating your storage

Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage and you'll likely see Photos at the top — and inside it, video is the heavyweight. One minute of 4K video takes 300–400 MB. A year of casual recording easily adds up to 50–100 GB. Apps, messages, and browser caches are rounding errors by comparison.

Compress, don't delete

Compression re-encodes each video at a lower bitrate and (optionally) resolution. Done well, the compressed copy looks nearly identical on your phone's screen but takes 50–90% less space. Your memories stay watchable, shareable, and in Photos — just lighter.

Step-by-step: reclaim gigabytes in one session

  1. Install Video Compressor and Resizer — free, and just 5.7 MB itself.
  2. Batch-select your videos. Start with the oldest and largest — screen recordings, long events, 4K clips. The app processes multiple videos in one run.
  3. Choose archive settings. For old memories, 720p with Output Quality: Fair shrinks 1080p clips by about 87%. For recent favorites, keep the resolution and use Good — about 57% smaller with no visible difference (VMAF 97 in our test).
  4. Verify, then delete originals. Play a few compressed copies. Happy? Delete the originals — and remember to empty Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted, or the space won't come back for 30 days.

Review each result, then delete the originals to get the space back.
Real math: 60 GB of 1080p video leaves about 26 GB at the original resolution / Good, or about 8 GB at 720p / Fair. That's 34–52 GB reclaimed — without deleting one memory.

Reclaim your storage today — keep every memory, lose the gigabytes.

What about iCloud "Optimize Storage"?

Optimize iPhone Storage offloads full-resolution files to iCloud and keeps small previews on the device. It helps — but it moves the problem instead of solving it: you now pay monthly for iCloud space, need internet to watch your own videos, and the originals still take the same room in your backup. Compression permanently shrinks the files everywhere: on device, in iCloud, and in every future backup.
